LT GEN HARBAKSH SINGH VrC. Padma vibhushan. And padma bhushan. He was commissioned on 15 july 1935 in 5 sikh in British India and he did attachment with a British 2 battalion and was stationed, at Rawalpindi. after seeing action NWP hecwas sent to 5 SIKH Bn 11 sikh regt in 1936.When WWII broke out in 1939,he moved to British malaya and to kuantan. During withdrawl from kuantan ,he was trapped in a japanese ambush and was seriously injured and was evacuated to singapore and was a prisoner till the end of the war. he was repatriated to India after the war and saw action in 1948 indo pak war. For his brave actions in the operations was awarded VrC. Through out the operations in 1948 as a brigadier,he displayed exemplary courage, stubbornness, leadership qualities of highest order and he appeared at forward posts without caring for personal safety.He also had a stint as Dy commandant at IMA and in staff appointments and soon commanded 27 inf div and 5 inf div. During china war in 1962 ,he took over IV corps and later as Goc 33 corps. He became GOC in C western command in 1964 ... 69. He led the Indian Army right from ladakh to Rann of kutch with such great qualities that within three years of 1962'war,the defeated Indian Army again rose like a Divine bird phoenix from Ashes and became a deadly striking force and this was demonstrated in 1965 war very amply. Indian Army made a pulp of patton tanks with vintage shermans and centurions and raced to capture Lahore causing jitters among world powers and pakistani commanders including field marshal Ayub khan. the leadership of Gen Harbaksh singh as army cdr played great role in all these achievements and in stimulating fighting spirit in Indian Army. the head of Indian Army again rose sky high and world leaders and ww ii veterans from West were awe struck with success of Indian ferocious tank battles at western Front. There were no such tank battles in the world after wwii. The general retired from service in sept 1969. he was awarded padma vibhushan and padma bhushan for distinguished service. He passed away on 14 nov 1999..
