VELU TAMBI. PRIME MINISTER OF TRAVANCORE COCHIN.. Martyr.. 19 century. Velu tambi was the pm of travancore Cochin kingdom during the days of king bala rama verma kulasekhara perumal one of the most uninspiring kings of the dynasty. at younger ageTambi was a tehsildar and was popular among people. raja kesav das the earlier Pm was murdered and jayant sankaran of calicut kingdom influenced king of travancore. And he was appointed the pmalong with two deputies. High Taxes arbitrarily were introduced to fill treasury that was resented by the people. the agitated people were led by velu tambi to the king and they represented to the king and demanded that shankaran be removed and. Punished. accordingly shankaran was dismissed and his ears were cut. his deputies were also punished .velu thambi was appointed the dalwai the pm. macaulay the British resident demanded the kingdom to pay the dues ,arrears and high taxes. this resulted in resentment in the kingdom and velutambi realised that clash with the Englishmen was inevitable. Soon ,the conflict developed . velu tamabi attacked britsh residency with his troops and captured the fort while Resident Macaulay escaped on a horse. Later, many battles were fought. the British brought in reinforcements from madras and slowly the tide changed. Tambi Escaped to malladi and took a shelter in a temple along with his brother. Earlier , he handed over a letter to the king addressed toThe British that he was, responsible for the turmoil and the king is not to be blamed. at malladi ,he was betrayed by some people and the British troops surrounded the temple. Tambi committed suicide and his brother was captured. he was the foremost to raise the flag of protest and fought for freedom and sacrificed his life in 1809 long before rani of kittur, veera pandya katta bomman, Tippu sultan ,rani laxmi bai, Avanti bai of ramgad, nanasaheb peshwa , tamtya tope, kunwar singh and emperror bahadur shah zafar, II and others in 1857conflict.
